Red - the colour of the season

Hi everyone!

As I'm sure you all know by now, I fly over to London every 2 weeks to study a diploma in fashion styling at the London School of Styling. We were working on an editorial shoot based on the theme "red" and I touched on it for my column in The Leader newspaper but wanted to include it on my blog aswell.

The fiery shade dominated the catwalks for Autumn/Winter. Featuring coats to trouser suits to oversized knits all of the main fashion powerhouses such as Alexander Mc Queen, Emilia Wickstead who I interned for at London Fashion Week and Marc Jacobs jumped on board to prove that it's not only a colour but signifies the power, strength and confidence within a lady.

If we think back to some iconic moments in fashion history, you will find that the colour red is embodied in many of them. When Audrey Hepburn starred in the film 'Funny Faces' in 1957, she wore a Givenchy red gown that lent itself to being the most unforgettable wardrobe moment of the film. In 1956, Marilyn Monroe shot a look for the Saturday Evening Post wearing this fitted, sultry dress titled "The New Marilyn Monroe" and this featured some of her most iconic quotes. In 1991 Cindy Crawford wore a plunge neckline, Versace dress that now has its' own Wikipedia page and in 1995 Princess Diana wore a stunning dress by Christian Lacroix with matching shoes.

Red isn't just a colour - it's the trademark for an iconic shoe by Christian Louboutin and a lipstick shade that has been worn for generations. You can also pair it with numerous other shades such as blue, pink, white or black to make any look stand out from the crowd.

Personally, I love the colour red and recently purchased a suit from Penney's that will be a wardrobe staple for the next few seasons. I call it my power suit! I wanted to keep everything really chic and classy so matched it with black and white, - a combo you can always rely on. One of the best things about this suit is that it can also be worn as separates. I can wear the blazer with jeans for a stylish, off duty look or the trousers with a bodysuit for a funky, on trend look.

What shade of red are you going to wear this season?

Until next time,

Emma
